Who we are

We’re a lively Bible-centred Anglican church, seeking to share the good news of Jesus Christ with the people of Dagenham.

Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s word written, and so we seek to listen, understand and obey it. We want what God says in Scripture to shape our life as individuals and as a church. So we try our best to help everyone understand what the Bible says and apply it to our lives.

Good news

We believe that the Bible is good news for everyone because it’s about Jesus Christ, who God sent into the world to save sinners like us. So we aim to help one another to have faith in Jesus, know him better, and become more like him, day by day. Questions are welcome, whether or not you would call yourself a Christian.

Community

Christianity is a team effort, it’s not meant to be a solo pursuit. We need one another for encouragement, support and accountability. So we aim to be a church that loves and cares for one another, not just on Sundays but during the week.

Anglican

St George’s is part of the Church of England in the Diocese of Chelmsford.

We belong to the East London Gospel Partnership, a network of local evangelical churches which includes Dagenham Parish Church and Becontree Church. We join together regularly for prayer, training, and mission.

St George’s is part of the ReNew network, which is is a movement seeking to support a nation of healthy local churches for the evangelisation of England.

Prayers of Love and Faith

In December 2023, the House of Bishops commended the Prayers of Love and Faith for praying with and for a same-sex couple in a regular public worship service. We have reflected on the Prayers and concluded that they represent a serious departure from the Bible’s teaching on sex and relationships. Therefore, we have decided not to use them and to distance ourselves from the current Bishop of Chelmsford who advocates for their use. We seek alternative spiritual oversight wherever possible, while remaining under the legal authority of the Bishop of Chelmsford. St George’s already receives the extended oversight of the Bishop of Ebbsfleet, under the provisions made by the Church of England for churches that believe, as we do, that the Bible teaches complementary roles for men and women in the church.

A better story

We believe that the Bible teaches a better story for men and women, whatever their sexual orientation. This is grounded in the God who is a relationship – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – and who offers to draw us into this relationship through his Son, Jesus Christ, if we turn to him in repentance and faith. It is a relationship of unconditional love and transforming power, as God by his Sprit works to transform each of us into the likeness of his Son.

Global

We’re glad to be part of the worldwide church, and we support mission partners in Sierra Leone and Malawi.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
